สำหรับหนังสือเล่มนี้ เป็นการรวบรวมบันทึกการเดินทางมายังประเทศไทย หรือ สยาม และ จาวา หรือ ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย รวมทั้งประเทศใกล้เคียงคือ Cochin China ซึ่งขณะนั้นอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของฝรั่งเศส ประเทศกัมพูชา ซึ่งขณะนั้นอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของสยาม รวมทั้งเกาะสุมาตรา และหมู่เกาะในคาบสมุทรมาลายา โดยเป็นบันทึกการเดินทางในช่วงปลายรัชกาลที่ 4 ต้นรัชกาลที่ 5 โดยเนื้อหาส่วนใหญ่เป็นเรื่องราวของประเทศสยาม และ Java ไม่ว่าจะเป็นคำอธิบายเกี่ยวกับประเทศ เมือง วัด ศาสนา ผู้คน มารยาท และขนบธรรมเนียมท้องถิ่นที่น่าสนใจ ซึ่งทั้งหมดมาจากการสังเกตและบันทึกส่วนตัวของผู้เรียบเรียงโดยตรง นับว่าเป็นหนังสืออ้างอิงทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญโดยเฉพาะเกี่ยวกับประเทศสยามเมื่อ 100 กว่าปีที่ผ่านมา

The Boy Travelers in the Far East, Siam & Java, with descriptions of Cochin-China, Cambodia, Sumatra, and the Malay Archipelago was a travel memoir compiled by Thomas Wallace Knox, an author, writer, traveler, journalist, and former lieutenant colonel in the California National Guard during the 19th century, he wrote more than 45 books alongside his work as a correspondent for the New York Herald.

This book is one of his travel collections to Siam and Java, Cochin China, which at that time was under French rule, and Cambodia which at that time was under Siam including Sumatra and islands in the Malaya peninsula. It was a travel record during the end of King Rama IV, and the beginning of King Rama V. Most of the content is about Siam and Java as well as the Malay peninsula i.e., the country, city, temples, religion, people, etiquette, and interesting local customs, and traditions. All of this came directly from the personal observations and notes of the author which contain an important historical reference, especially about Siam over 100 years ago.
