หนังสือ Temples and elephant เป็นหนังสือที่เรียบเรียงโดย Carl Bock เป็นนักธรรมชาติและนักสำรวจชาวนอร์เวย์ เขาได้เข้ามาสำรวจงานด้านภูมิศาสตร์ในประเทศสยามนในช่วง ค.ศ. 1881 โดยใช้เวลาสำรวจอยู่ประมาณ 1 ปี โดยเดินทางสำรวจดินแดนแถบภาคเหนือของประเทศ โดยใช้เส้นทางทางนน้ำ ผ่านไปทางอยุธยา อ่างทอง นครสวรรค์ กำแพงเพชร ไปจนถึงลำปาง และต่อไปจนถึงลำพูน เชียงใหม่ เชียงราย กระทั่งเข้าสู่ดินแดนไทใหญ่ ในอาณาเขตยูนนาน หรือสิบสองปันนาในเวลานั้น การสำรวจและการเดินทางของเขาในครั้งนั้นถูกเขียนขึ้นเป็นเอกสารและได้รับการตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกออกเป็นภาษาเยอรมันใน ค.ศ. 1883 และต่อมาได้มีการแปลหนังสือนั้นออกเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ในอีกปีต่อมาคือใน ค.ศ. 1884 กล่าวกันว่าผลงานเล่มนี้ของเขาได้รับการชมเชยอย่างสูงจากบรรดาสมาคมภูมิศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์ของประเทศต่างๆ ในยุโรป ส่งผลให้เขาได้รับเหรียญเชิดชูเกียรติ และเหรียญตราเกียรติยศจากกษัตริย์แห่งออสเตรีย และ สมาคมภูมิศาสตร์หลายแห่งเชิญให้เขาเข้าไปเป็นสมาชิกกิตติมศักดิ์อีกด้วย หนังสือเล่มนี้ยังได้รับความน่าเชื่อถือ และถูกนำไปใช้อ้างอิงในการศึกษาและสนใจภูมิศาสตร์ของประเทศไทยในเวลานั้นอีกมากด้วย

กระทั่งถึงปัจจุบันนี้ ผลงานบันทึกและเขียนของเขากลายเป็นหนังสืออันทรงค่า ที่เหมาะควรจะเรียนรู้และเข้าใจต่อสภาพของประเทศไทยในมุมท้องถิ่นภาคเหนือในยุคสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเล้า อย่างมากยิ่ง

หนังสือปกแข็งขนาด 15 x 23 ซม หนา 439 หน้า แบ่งเนื้อหาออกเป็น 32 หัวข้อครอบคลุมเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับประเทศสยามเมื่อ 139 ปีมาแล้ว อย่างถุกต้อง ครบถ้วน พร้อมภาพประกอบทั้งสีและขาวดำ แบบ block engraving จำนวน 40 ภาพ ตีพิมพ์เป็นฉบับ First English Edition โดย Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, London ปี ค.ศ. 1884 ในสภาพดี เดิมๆ ทั้งเล่ม

หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นหนังสือเกี่ยวกับประเทศสยามที่หายากมาก นักสะสมหนังสือเก่าไม่ควรพลาด

“Temples and Elephants” was compiled by Carl Bock, a Norwegian naturalist, and explorer. He came to explore the geography of Siam in 1881, spending about a year exploring the northern regions of the country, using the waterway Passing through Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet to Lampang and continuing to Lamphun, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, until entering the Tai Yai in Yunnan or Xishuangbanna at that time. His expeditions were documented and first published in German in 1883, and subsequently translated into English in 1884. His work is said to have been highly praised by the European Societies of Geography and Science, for which he was awarded a Medal of Honor by the King of Austria, and several geographical societies invited him to become an honorary member. The book has also gained credibility and was used as a reference in studying the geography of Thailand at that time. His writings have become priceless books. The ideal should be to learn and understand the conditions of Thailand in the northern region during the reign of King Chulalongkorn.
