In 1887, King Chulalongkorn granted a concession to Dane Andreas du Plessis de Richelieu, a Danish naval officer and businessman who later received the noble title Phraya Cholayuth Yothin. He was to establish and operate the first tram route in Bangkok for a period of 50 years. The service operated seven routes, and a limited company was established with the King holding 50% of the shares. Dane Andreas served as the chairman of the company, with Aage Westenholz, as the engineer and managing director. In 1894, the tram system transitioned from horse power to electric power, increasing the speed of the trams. However, frequent accidents occurred due to Bangkok's narrow streets.

A Bangkok Tram Company stock certificate, measuring 40.5 × 28 cm, issued in 1912, is available for collectors of historical documents and government bonds.
