"The Naked Nagas" is compiled and edited by Dr. Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf, an Austrian anthropologist who was a former tribal advisor to Hyderabad State, a former independent state in northern India, and a professor in the Department of Anthropology at Osmania University in India and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
In this book, Dr. Christoph presents the story of the Naga tribe, headhunters from the Naga Hills, a complex mountain range approximately 3,825 meters high, located on the border between India and Burma. The ancestors of the Nagas migrated and settled in this area for thousands of years. The Nagas are a warrior tribe consisting of 66 clans, such as the Konyak, Angami, and Zeliangrong clans. They have engaged in inter-tribal conflicts and have lived independently in this region for a long time.
The content of the book leans more towards travel literature than academic writing, presenting the complex stories of foreign travelers exploring ethnography under the influence of the British Empire, in a land almost unseen or unknown to others. It includes descriptions of the people, culture, and geography, supported by photographs. His photographs significantly contributed to the dissemination of Naga ethnography in Europe, especially among Germans, and Dr. Christoph is considered a pioneer in visual anthropology. He worked among the Naga people, building good friendships with local British administrators. He successfully learned the local language and could communicate with the tribes without an interpreter.
The hardcover book, measuring 15x22.5 cm, contains 216 pages divided into 25 chapters, with 53 black-and-white illustrations. It is the second revised edition, published by Thacker, Spink & Co, Calcutta, India, in 1946. The book is in good condition and comes with a dust jacket.
