หนังสือ Bird s from Siam and the Malay Peninsula รวบรวมโดย Hugh M Smith นักชีววิทยา ชาวอเมริกัน อธิบดีสำนักงานประมง (the Bureau of Fisheries) แห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา สมิธ เดินทางมายังประเทศไทยเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1923 เพื่อรับตำแหน่ง Adviser ประจำกระทรวงเกษตราธิการ (กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ ในปัจจุบัน) หมอสมิธมีผลงานทางด้านการค้นพบความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพและทำการอนุกรมวิธานไว้มากมาย โดยค้นพบชนิดพันธุ์ของสัตว์ประเภทต่าง ๆ ทั้งสัตว์น้ำ สัตว์เลื้อยคลาน สัตว์ครึ่งบกครึ่งน้ำ สัตว์ปีก พรรณพืช

สำหรับเล่มนี้ เป็นผลงานการค้นคว้ารวบรวมนกสายพันธ์ต่างๆ ในประเทศไทยโดยเขาออกเดินทางค้นคว้าด้วยตนเองตั้งแต่ใต้สุด จนถึงเหนือสุดแห่งสยาม รวมทั้งตามเกาะแก่งต่างๆ ทั่วประเทศ และส่งผลงานการค้นคว้าของเขาไปยัง United States National Museum ในอเมริกา นอกจากผลงานการค้นคว้าของ Smith แล้วภายในเล่มยังรวบรวมผลงานของ Dr W.L Abott นักธรรมชาติวิทยาชาวอเมริกันที่เดินทางมาสำรวจนกในประเทศสยามในปี ค.ศ. 1896 อีกท่านหนึ่งด้วย

The book "Birds from Siam and the Malay Peninsula" was compiled by Hugh M. Smith, an American biologist and Director of the Bureau of Fisheries of the United States. Smith traveled to Thailand in 1923 to assume the position of Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture (the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives at present). Dr. Smith made significant contributions in discovering and cataloging various biological species, including aquatic animals, reptiles, amphibians, semi-aquatic animals, birds, and flora.

This volume presents research and collection of various bird species in Thailand, conducted by Smith himself, ranging from the southernmost to the northernmost parts of Siam, including various islands across the country. His research findings were sent to the United States National Museum. Apart from Smith's work, the volume also includes the research of Dr. W.L. Abott, an American naturalist who explored Thai birds in 1896.

The book is hardcover, measuring 24.5 x 15.5 cm, with 581 pages and no illustrations. It was published by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., first edition in 1938, and is in good condition.
