"Around the World with General Grant" is a historical account of the global journey of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. General Grant's world tour began in May of 1877, just a few months after his second presidential term ended. After serving as a general during the Civil War and holding consecutive presidential terms during the post-war era, Grant and his wife, Julia, embarked on a much-needed journey of relaxation following the stress of war and politics that had consumed them for several years. This journey took more than two and a half years and offered the opportunity to visit significant locations worldwide, including an audience with Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Pope Leo XIII, and Otto Von Bismarck.

During his travels, General Grant was warmly received by every country as a celebrated hero of the Civil War, and he unofficially represented the United States as a diplomat during his extended tour of the Far East. When he arrived in Singapore, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), the fifth monarch of Siam, extended an invitation to visit Thailand. Grant accepted the invitation, spending six days in Siam from April 11 to April 16, 1879, during which he had close interactions with King Chulalongkorn. The Siamese government organized official receptions in his honor. General Grant was the first former U.S. president to visit Siam (now Thailand) in 1879, making it a noteworthy event in the history of U.S.-Thai relations.

The book is a hardcover edition measuring 19 x 25 cm and consists of two volumes. It is divided into 45 chapters and includes approximately 900 black and white illustrations, including important images from General Grant's journey. When General Grant arrived at the foreign ministry pier along the Chao Phraya River in Thailand, he had the opportunity to visit King Chulalongkorn and received a royal reception as a royal envoy. This particular photograph is considered significant evidence of the long-standing Thai-American relationship and friendship, which has spanned over a century.

Both volumes of the book were first published as a 1st edition in 1879, new cover, good condition.
